In this guide we’ll show how to make a Sound Devices 6-series accept external Timecode and Genlock.
Genlock is exclusive to the 664 and 688. The 633 does not feature a sync input.
Turn on all your Lockit devices, choose one of them to be the Master Clock – then press-and-hold the green button to broadcast timecode and frame rate through ACN and you are set.
Make sure all devices and Lockits run on the same frame rate.
- On the Lockit, press green and red simultaneously to enter menu, then and navigate to “Project Rate”
- On the 6-series:
- Enter Menu
- Go to “6. Timecode/Sync”
- Go to "2. Frame Rate"
- Select your frame rate
How to make the 6-series accept external Timecode:
- Enter Menu
- Go to “6. Timecode/Sync”
- Go to "1. Timecode Mode"
- Choose "Ext TC"
For the 6-series you need a TC-IO cable.
Connect it to the 5-pin timecode connector.
Now the 6-series accepts the external timecode source. You can enter the Jam menu to confirm this by pressing Meters and Mic simultaneously.
How to set up Genlock (664 and 688 only):
- In the Lockit Menu set the Sync output to word clock. The sample rate should match the rate you are recording in.
- Enable external Genlock on the 664 or 688:
- Enter Menu
- Go to “6. Timecode/Sync”
- Go to "8. Sync Reference"
- Choose "Word Clock"
For genlock sync you need an extra cable - the SYNC-OUT
Connect it to the Wordclock In BNC socket.
Once the 6-series has recognized the external sync source, the display will show a sync indicator at the bottom.
